USA recorded a famous victory at Hazeltine in 2016 and they will be aiming to retain their title when the Ryder Cup returns to Europa this month.
Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson had already been confirmed as members of Furyk’s USA team based on a points system.
And the US captain revealed three of his four wildcard picks this evening with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau all being named to his side.
Furyk will reveal his fourth and final pick on September 10.
“We were looking for players that have a body of work, players that are in good form and we’re heading to Europe, playing on foreign soil, so wanted players that would handle that situation and thrive on it,” Furyk said.
Woods was previously named as one of Furyk’s vice-captains for this year’s competition, but a sensational comeback in 2018 has resulted in him being rewarded with his first Ryder Cup playing spot since 2012.
His 33 Ryder Cup matches played rank fifth all-time among Americans and his 4-1-2 career mark in singles includes an undefeated 2-0-1 mark on foreign soil.
He’s posted consecutive top-10s in majors, including a runner-up finish at last month’s PGA Championship at Bellerive. Woods is currently No. 26 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Mickelson has been a stalwart in the USA Ryder Cup team over the years and this will be his 12th consecutive appearance in the famous competition.
A Captain’s pick for the first time, Mickelson won the 2018 WGC-Mexico Championship in March. The five-time major champion’s current standing in the Official World Golf Ranking is No 24.
For DeChambeau, he has really come of age in the past two weeks, winning both the Northern Trust and Dell Technologies Championship.
The 24-year-old has won four times on the PGA Tour this season and is currently No 7 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
David Duval, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Davis Love III and Steve Stricker have been confirmed as Furyk’s vice-captains.
